John’s Commitment
Guided by his values of honesty and service to others, Dr. John Van Doorn is dedicated to improving the quality of life for all in Columbus, Georgia. With decades of global travel and experience as a political science professor, John has seen what truly works—and he’s ready to bring the world’s best ideas home. But he knows progress takes teamwork. That’s why he believes in meeting people where they are to ensure every voice helps shape the future.
People First
Honesty and service are the values that were instilled in John as an Eagle Scout and member of First Presbyterian Church. Those values have guided him through life at home and abroad. Now, John is running for City Council to continue serving others and improve life for everyone in Columbus. With his scout’s honor, you can count on John to always put people first.
Walking a Mile in Your Shoes
Leaders can’t truly serve the people if they don’t understand their everyday lives. While working in the Netherlands, John was struck by how Prime Minister Mark Rutte biked through the city to meet directly with citizens. Inspired by that example, John will hold regular “walk-abouts” and “bike-abouts” in Columbus. These events will give neighbors the chance to show him their challenges firsthand—both during his campaign and once he’s on City Council. John is ready to walk and ride alongside you to make sure your voice is heard.
Transparency in Public Service
Public servants shouldn’t make private deals. John is committed to transparency and open government. He wants to update the City Charter, so Council runs more fairly. He would bring openness and clarity to the process for filling vacancies and approving big taxpayer projects. One idea that he would like to bring to Columbus is a process called sortition, a public lottery that selects everyday citizens to serve on an overhaul committee.
Improving Health and Access to Food
We all share the same wish: a long life filled with health and happiness. Some areas - called “Blue Zones” - are known for their long lifespans. John has studied these areas, and he will work to turn Columbus into a Blue Zone. That means cutting red tape on green grocers, so fresh food vendors can thrive. Together we will end food deserts by bringing the world’s best ideas to Columbus.
Building Community Spaces
People are healthier and happier when they have safe spaces to get outside and get together. John wants to bring public squares with green communal grocers, small restaurants, and services to everyone in Columbus —especially our neighbors in south and east Columbus. This is an example of using “best practices” from around the world to help Columbus become a more prosperous, welcoming and international city.
Supporting Local Businesses
Economic development should benefit every corner of Columbus, especially South and East Columbus. John will seek outside grants and micro-loans for small businesses to thrive.
Lowering Power Bills
Renewable energy is not only better for the environment - it is also easier on the pocketbooks of Columbus families. John will bring utility bills down by supporting renewable energy like rooftop solar, better insulation, and net metering. He’ll look for outside funding—not more local taxes—to help families save money.
